What is a Crown?

A crown is a type of covering that can encase an entire tooth and restore it to its original shape and size. A crown may be necessary if your tooth has become broken or fractured, or your tooth has decayed beyond what a filling could fix. Crowns may also be necessary due to cosmetic enhancements or after root canals. Before crowns were available, teeth that were severely damaged or decayed had to be completely extracted. Now we can save damaged teeth and protect their tooth structure with careful attention, skill and professional dental crowns.

Our crowns are made with a high quality porcelain that mimics the natural translucence and color of natural teeth. Before a crown is crafted, Dr. Sapienza will take a mold of your original  tooth, and the crown will be custom crafted to provide perfect occlusion and the right shape and size. If you come into our dental office the crown process may take more than one appointment. During your first appointment, your tooth will be prepared for the crown. If your crown hasn’t been crafted, Dr. Sapienza will place a temporary crown while the permanent crown is being crafted.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a series of crowns that have been attached together in order to “bridge” a gap left        by a missing tooth. Dental bridges are a comfortable and affordable way to replace a missing tooth. To replace a missing tooth with a dental bridge, first the adjacent teeth will need to be prepared for crowns. Once the teeth are prepared, the adjacent teeth will serve as anchor points for the bridge, and enough crowns to bridge the gap will be cemented between them.

Dental bridges are an excellent procedure for patients who have lost a tooth and want to restore their  smile and the functionality of their teeth. To find out more about dental bridges or porcelain crowns,   contact us at our office today. We look forward to hearing from you.
